My COVID-19 blog post was extremely popular, so adding more information in a follow up post here. In it, I've continued to compile a list of relevant resources and ideas for stylists/barbers on how to prepare for, and make good use of, the downtime. It's not intended to tell you what to do, but rather give information that will help you make better decisions depending on your situation. Keep in mind this information is as of MARCH 22nd, 2020, and things are changing rapidly. A link to real-time information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is provided under Section 5 below.

(1) Ways to Make Money During the Downtime
- Gift Cards

- Provides overview of how to set these up, and tech tools for doing it.
- Contact your hair product rep(s). See if they can set you up with an affiliate website to sell their products from home.
- Set up Amazon affiliate links and market them on Instagram.
- See examples of how to use Milkshake to do this via my "COVID-19 Downtime I" blog post.
- Under Section 2, within the link for "sample email, text and story templates", you'll see a guide for how to set up Milkshake for your Instagram.
- Add your affiliate link to your Milkshake page.
- Offer to help salon owners with their social media strategy for an hourly fee.
- Conduct online product testing for websites and apps (no technical experience needed, they want insights from real users).
(2) Business Closures, Loans for Individuals and Businesses, + Unemployment
- Business Closures for California (where I'm based):
- As of March 21st, 2020, the City of Los Angeles orders "Safer at Home" mandate.
- As of March 19th, 2020, Cal Matters, Gov. Gavin Newsom orders all of California to shelter in place
- As of March 16th, 2020, six counties in the Bay Area order a "Shelter in Place" mandate. Overview sent to us by the law firm supporting HairLooks, WSGR.
- Resources for Personal Loans
- A list of sources for freelancers to obtain loans during this epidemic - link here (article published by KQED).
- The One Fair Wage Fund is providing cash assistance to service workers that typically accept tips as part of their income.
- Resources for Business Loans
- Bill D'Alessandro, @billda, tweeted sources for small business loans. Link to tweet here (read through the comments within the post for the full list).
- Facebook plans to invest $100 million in 30,000 small businesses in over 30 countries where its employees work and live. Link to article on this here, and updates on when applications will be available here.
- The New York Times published this article "Your Money: A Hub for Help During the Coronavirus Crisis" to give insight on how to access unemployment across the USA.
- The New York Times has also set up a free page of articles related to news on Coronavirus here.
(3) Covid-19 Beauty Industry Economic Hardship Petition
- My "COVID-19 Downtime I" blog post mentioned a petition for economic hardship in the beauty industry.
- In just a week's time they have collected over 1 million signatures!
