Certainty and control have left the chat, and uncertainty and lack of structure have entered. There are so many "what ifs" swirling through our minds today. Despite this, we still need to be ready to act. Focus on the future instead of the present. Take it week by week, and try not to stress over the things you can't control.
I've been using this list to get ready to spring into action as soon as Shelter-in-Place is over, and it's safe to start working again. Hoping that it can help you come up with your own plan.
(1) Build/Gather Your Existing Client List, and Add New Ones
If you need more reasons on why having an updated client list is meaningful and how to utilize it, check out my blog post on how to Build Your Client List. With this list, you'll be able to identify your supporters and grow your chair. Use it as a map to connect with new and existing customers in an impactful way.
(2) Update Your Online Presence
Use content like videos, photos and links to drive your ideal customer to your chair. Try the following to support and share this content:
(3) Spotify Playlists
Have you ever been in the flow at the salon and felt extremely grateful about how wonderful your space is? A key element that cements this for you and your clients is the music you play. I'm betting clients are missing the salon's music just like we are? With this in mind, why not create a Spotify playlist that you can share with them to drive engagement?
(4) What to Broadcasting Right Now Before Reopening
We may be living in crazy times, but don't let that stop you from being ready to reconnect with your clients.

(2) Update Your Online Presence
Use content like videos, photos and links to drive your ideal customer to your chair. Try the following to support and share this content:
- Tweak/freshen up your bio on Instagram, and on your website.
- If you don't have a website, check out a free app called Milkshake. Use it to build a "mini website" that lives within the link in your Instagram bio.
- On your website and/or mini website, include:
- Links and instructions on how to book with you, or get added to your waitlist.
- List common recommendations you repeat to clients, such as how they should care for their color, styling tips, and your favorite products.
- Spotify playlists that remind your clients of the salon (see Section #3).
- Via Instagram, add static posts to your page that reference blogs you find helpful, or that instruct viewers to check out the new mini website in your bio.
- If you haven't started using it yet, try TikTok and generate videos to start posting there. It's easy to share the content you create with Instagram, and they have some unique video tools.
(3) Spotify Playlists

I'm betting clients are missing the salon's music just like we are? With this in mind, why not create a Spotify playlist that you can share with them to drive engagement?
- Add a link to access the playlist on your website and/or mini website. Check out this guide on how to generate the link here.
- Give people access in one of two ways:
- Require them to submit their email (great way to collect contact info for new and existing clients), and opt into your marketing updates to get the playlist link. Use a tool like OptinMonster to do this (video demo here).
- Give away free access to get your clients pumped about enjoying the music with you when you reopen. Use this when you want to prioritize engagement over collecting emails.
(4) What to Broadcasting Right Now Before Reopening
- New videos of your coloring and cutting techniques. The right client for you is someone who already knows how you will be servicing their hair before they even meet you.
- Photos of your space. New clients are comforted when they know where they will receive their services.
- Your waitlist. Considering you don't know exactly when you'll be able to reopen, let clients sign up for priority access to your chair when that happens. I suggest using Typeform instead of Google Forms to collect and organize the list. Within my Typeform, I ask the following questions to better organize my schedule and accommodate everyone.
- Want to be among the first to receive my latest news about booking and grand re-opening? Yes/No
- What's your name?
- And your email?
- What days of the week work best for you?
- What time of the day are you generally free?
- What service(s) are you looking to receive?
